Blessings at Bali’s Sacred Heart: Our schools Journey to Besakih

Some of our Founding Families at the water temple, Besakih, Bali.

On June 19, our founding families and community members came together for a pilgrimage to Besakih Temple, Bali’s Pura Besakih. Its Bali’s Mother Temple on the slopes of the volcano Mount Agung.

This wasn’t a tourist trip! A traditional Balinese rite of asking for divine blessings known as a Memohon Restu ceremony - important when beginning a new chapter.

For us, that chapter is the start of the Future Human School in Ubud, Bali. Our vision rooted not only in education and innovation, but in deep respect for the culture and spirit of the island where it has been born.

Our friend Wayan helped us to put the trip together and helped our Future Human students understand it’s history.

Besakih is the spiritual centre of Bali. For centuries the Balinese have journeyed here to give thanks, seek guidance, and mark important transitions. The temple complex itself is awesome - made up of over 50 individual temples layered up the mountain each aligned with different energies, gods and family temples.

All new projects in Bali should first ask for blessing - the restu. In Balinese cosmology, success is by harmony with the seen and unseen world. This blessing ceremony aligns our intentions with Future Human School as an echo of Tri Hita Karana - the Balinese way of being - the principles and valus on which Future Human School is built.

This ceremony for us felt like a rite of passage not just for the project, but for each of us personally. The energy of the temple is very special and all the children felt it too.

For us it was a moment to pause, reflect on how far we’ve come, celebrate together and make sure we are doing things right.

We will remember this trip forever, and will be sure to visit again.
